Warf rockets to RMR win, looks to cook at home track in Meridian

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Something clicked for Bryan Warf on Monday night.

After a disappointing opening to Northwest Asphalt Sprintcar Speedweek in Twin Falls, Idaho on Saturday, the Meridian, Idaho driver held off all challenges Monday for his third career victory in the ASA-sanctioned Canadian-American Western Winged Sprintcars Series.

Warf worked his way through the field during the Memorial Day Classic 50 at Rocky Mountain Raceways then held off fellow Meridian Speedway driver Johnny Giesler after the caution flag flew 12 laps from the end.

Warf, who drives for Pat Russell, moved into second place in the WWS all-time victory list. He has three wins in 12 series starts and his one of four drivers — all from Idaho — with multiple victories.

Giesler held on for second, while another Idaho driver — Middleton’s Sierra Jackson — was fourth. Salt Lake City’s Jimmy Waters finished In between the Spiers Construction Racing teammates.

Warf wasn’t the only driver turning heads Monday night.

Langford, British Columbia product Jeff Montgomery broke the track’s year-old qualifying record with a 12.477-second lap by speeding around the 3/8th-mile track at 108.199 mph. Montgomery wrested the mark away from Roseburg, Ore.’s Andy Alberding, who set the track and WWS venue record at the Memorial Day Classic last year with a 12.507-second lap.

Warf rebounded from a fifth-place showing in the Speedweek Opener on Saturday in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Unlike Saturday night, Warf found his groove right from the time trials during the second round of the five-night speedweek.

He showed up in the top five in two preliminaries. He was second to Cody Gerhardt in the second heat race and finished fifth in Trophy Dash A.

Things are looking up for Warf as he heads home. The last time the WWS visited Meridian Speedway, Warf won in dominating fashion, lapping all but the second- and third-place sprintcars to win the WWS Pepsi 75.

The WWS season continues Wednesday on Warf’s home track with Bob and Tom Naylor Memorial Classic, which is the third round of Northwest Asphalt Sprintcar Speedweek.

A $1,000 bonus awaits the most successful driver at the end of the five-night Speedweek, which concludes at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway on Friday and Saturday with the BOB FM Diamond Cup XXV.

Also available at Meridian is a $2,500 bounty for the first driver who can post a 10-second lap on the historic paved quarter-mile oval.

Western Winged Sprints open to packed house in Twin

TWIN FALLS, Idaho – A decade of pent-up excitement let loose Saturday night as the ASA-sanctioned Canadian-American Western Winged Sprintcar Series blew through Magic Valley Speedway.

The WWS became the first winged sprint tour to visit the 1/3rd-mile oval since about 2003, and the fans were all too happy to come out for the show.

“Those cars were just fast, fast, fast,” track promoter and former NASCAR Southwest Tour champion Eddy McKean said.

After a sluggish start, Sierra Jackson and her crew hit the reset button and found the formula to capture the checkered flag in the season opener, which also stood as a points race for ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway’s Mtn. Dew Winged Sprintcars.

The reigning ASA-sanctioned Canadian-American Western Winged Sprintcars Series champ went wire-to-wire Saturday night to win the season-opening 50-lap feature.

“We started over and it worked,” Jackson said. “Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.”

The Middleton, Idaho racer started on the outside of the front row after scuffling through the early stages of the day at Magic Valley Speedway.

Jackson said her crew had to re-block the car and adjust shocks prior to the main event, which kicked off the second annual Northwest Sprintcar Asphalt Speedweek.

Speedweek continues Monday night with the 50-lap Memorial Day Classic at Rocky Mountain Raceways in West Valley City, Utah. About 20 sprintcars from Canada, California, Oregon, Utah and Idaho are expected to make the field.

Jackson felt pressure from A Dash winner Jeff Montgomery of Langford, British Columbia, but the Canadian felt just as much pressure from third-place racer Johnny Giesler of Meridian, Idaho when the top three sprintcars drove into slower traffic with four laps to go.

Giesler, who earlier in the night set the series record for Magic Valley with a 12.195-second qualifying lap, drove his Spiers Construction sprintcar form eighth to third in the main event.

“We’ve been struggling a little bit all day,” Giesler said. “The track was a little sticky today, and it looked like everybody was a little loose. That happens sometime.”

Giesler evening nearly ended on Lap 23 when Quesnel, British Columbia driver Ron Larson lost a right rear tire in the middle of turn 3 and 4 and parked his car sideways with a lurch. Giesler was running fifth directly behind Larson at the time of the yellow flag.

It took two restarts before the race got back on pace.

Jackson took the lead for good with 26 laps to go when she drove in front of Murgoitio from the bottom of the track on the backstretch.

Giesler set his sights on Murgoitio, getting slightly squirrely coming out Turn 4 on Lap 26 during his pursuit.

Jackson, Montgomery and Giesler broke away from the field after that.

Pressure from Giesler held Montgomery back as he chased Jackson.

“I knew Johnny was staying with me, too,” Montgomery said. “You’ve got to pick your holes and not leave much open.”

Murgoitio got the checkered flag in the second heat, taking advantage of Ryan Burdett’s bad luck on the final lap.

Burdett’s strong start came to an abrupt end as he led the field on the white-flag lap in the eight-lap heat race. He lost the engine, but quick thinking probably saved the price of buying a new motor.

“I looked down, and I had no oil pressure,” the West Jordan, Utah driver said. “I shut it off before it completely grenaded.”

While Burdett may have saved the engine from fatal damage, the kill switch move gave Murgoitio the momentum he needed to get the victory.

It was a disappointing development after Burdett had pulled away from the field to win the B trophy dash. In the post-race interview, he may have foreshadowed the bad luck.

“It was nice to get the car working finally,” Burdett said. “We were struggling earlier in the day.”

Ron Larson made the long, long tow from Quesnel, British Columbia picked up his second checkered flag of the night in one of the eight-lap heat races. His words after picking up the hardware turned out to be ominous.

The Canadian put on a dominating performance, leading the field by a half-second.

Roseburg, Ore.’s Andy Alberding worked his way from the back row to finish second. He battled with Meridian, Idaho’s Bryan Warf midway through the race, eventually overtaking him for third place with three laps to go.

Alberding then passed Richie Larson of Prince George, British Columbia on the final lap for second place.

Jeff Montgomery, part of a strong contingent of Canadians who came south to fly with the Western Winged Sprints, held off countryman Matt Mansell through the four-lap A Dash.

“It felt good,” the Langford, British Columbia racer said of picking up the checkered flag. “Matt was kinda freaking moe out a little bit.”

Both Montgomery and Victoria, British Columbia’s Mansell went sideways in the turns while they battled hard on the front row. Mansell eventually broke traction and ran through the infield in Turn 1 on the white flag lap.

West Jordan, Utah driver Ryan Burdett pulled away from the field to win the B dash and pick up the first checkered flag of the WWS season.

There were two other Canadians in Burdett’s dash – Ron Larson and Richie Larson of Prince George, British Columbia.

Best winged sprinters from Northwest, Canada ready for historic run at Stateline in Post Falls
by Jon Brown, POST FALLS, Idaho — History will be made in more ways than one when the two premier winged sprintcar racing series in the Intermountain West roar into Stateline Speedway in Post Falls, Idaho this weekend.
“This is going to be the largest winged sprint show ever at Stateline,” first-year Stateline promoter Larry Bertrand said. “We’ve never had this many drivers calling ahead of time and getting their plans together.”
The Super Shoe Show VI has expanded to a Friday and Saturday event for the first time at the track near the popular resort town of Coeur d’Alene. The racer who earns the most points through the two nights of racing will win the 2012 championship.
Because of co-sanctioning from the Canadian-American Western Winged Sprints Series and the ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association, Bertrand expects more than 20 racecars as the for the two-day show. Previously, the Super Shoe has been run only on a Saturday night.
They’ll flock from the Boise, Idaho area, western Oregon, western Canada and Utah.
“It’s a good date for Stateline and the winged sprint drivers, just because of the way all the racers fell,” Bertrand said.
Fans will see up-and-coming drivers such as reigning Super Shoe champion Johnny “The Jet” Giesler, the current ASA NSRA series leader who holds a narrow advantage in the WWS standings over fellow Meridian, Idaho racer Mike Murgoitio, and championship veterans such as the Roseburg, Ore., duo of record-setting Andy Alberding and Matt Hein and Springfield, Ore., racer Rick “Quick” Brown, who won the Super Shoe in 2008.
Reigning ASA NSRA series champion Sierra Jackson of Middleton, Idaho, is another driver to watch this weekend.
Two Canadian provinces are expected to be represented with Dave Salamandick of Dewinton, Alberta joining British Columbia regulars Matt Mansell and Chris Schmelzle (Victoria, B.C.) and Scott Aumen (Duncan, B.C.) in making the tow.
This is only the third race of the season for NSRA. The series saw rainouts on June 16 in Vernon, British Columbia, and June 30 at Douglas County Speedway in Roseburg, Ore.
Admission on Friday night is $12.75 for a 40-lap main event, with the final night gate price at $18 for the 50-lap feature finale. Gates open at 5 p.m. with qualifying at 6 p.m. and a 7:15 p.m. opening ceremony each night.
Bertrand, a first-year promoter at Stateline after spending the past two years at Spokane County Raceway, said that long breaks between races before and after the Super Shoe give racers a chance to get to either prepare for the next big event or scratch the itch to get on the track.
“Half of the guys need to race and half are looking forward to a big race in the future,” he said.
Bertrand said the emergence of the Western Winged Sprints has put a spark in the regional winged sprintcar community.
“It think the WWS has really revitalized sprintcar racing all the way around this year,” he said. “When (WWS organizers) made the announcement in the preseason, they had a lot of good things going on ,that got everybody fired up again.”
He said the new excitement stems from getting new blood into the winged sprintcar culture as well as a cooperative spirit between the WWS and ASA NSRA.
This weekend’s races will be run under WWS engine rules that allow a maximum displacement of 360 cubic inches. Only American- or Canadian-made engines are legal in the series. The NSRA is carrying the tire rule package, providing five tires for each night of racing. If any other tires are used, the driver will be penalized and sent to the back of the field.
Giesler has won two Western Winged Sprints races this season, including the 96.1 BOB FM Diamond Cup presented by GNO Jewelry and the Bob and Tom Naylor Memorial Classic, both run at another quarter-mile bullring, Meridian Speedway, in southwest Idaho. Overall, Giesler has won five races, including his past four starts in a row at Meridian and Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City.
Another driver who calls Meridian home, reigning ASA NSRA series champion Sierra Jackson of Middleton, Idaho, won the 2010 Super Shoe.

Giesler edges fellow Meridian racer for Diamond Cup title
by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, Idaho – Johnny Giesler did exactly what he needed to do to win the 96.1 BOB FM Diamond Cup XXIV – finish in front of his friend, fellow Meridian driver Mike Murgoitio.
In the process of claiming the "asphalt" black diamond ring furnished by GNO Jewelry and AmeriStar, Giesler won Saturday night’s 50-lap feature at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway that wrapped up the Canadian-American Western Winged Sprintcars Northwest Asphalt Speedweek.
"Oh, man, it feels great," Giesler said after holding off Murgoitio. "I love racing with these guys. Me and Mike are friends away from the racetrack. I love the kid. I love racing with him."
Giesler won two of the Speedweek features – both at Meridian Speedway – and Murgoitio won twice, including Friday’s opener of the Diamond Cup, which was co-sanctioned by the ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association.
"We had a great run," Murgoitio said. "I have to take my hat off to Johnny Giesler. They had a great race tonight, they deserve the win.
"I can’t complain. We got two wins, they got two wins."
Giesler entered the Diamond Cup finale with his objective clear. Beat Murgoitio and win the ring.
Of course, there were 17 other open-wheel racers who came from around the Northwest, Intermountain West and Western Canada to try to land the ring, too.
West Jordan, Utah’s Ryan Burdett seemed determined to put in his two cents when he bolted to the lead when the first green flag dropped.
But Giesler sent an early message that the night would be his, roaring around Burdett in Turn 4 on the seventh lap. Burdett slowed considerably, seemingly resigned to the fact that there was no earthly way to contain Johnny The Jet.
Giesler checked out, building a three-second lead until Nampa’s Sara Henry and Meridian’s Wyatt King tangled after both suffered ruptured tires heading into Turn 1 with 33 laps remaining.
On the restart, Canadian Scott Aumen went high on the track to create a three-wide situation. His daring move allowed Murgoitio to clear lapped traffic that was lined up between he and Giesler.
Giesler also was able to get five seconds in front of the field – until he hit lapped traffic and Murgoitio crept back into the picture.
With seven laps left, Murgoitio drove up to Giesler’s bumper as the race leader was impeded by Garden City, Idaho’s Dave Parrie and Ron Larson from Quesnel, British Columbia.
Four laps from the finish, Murgoitio was still on his buddy’s bumper with a wide-open racetrack looming.
But Murgoitio ran out of time, and Giesler had his second victory in four nights. He won the Bob and Tom Naylor Classic 50 on Wednesday.
In the fast heat for the Diamond Cup winged sprints, Meridian’s Cody Veenstra made it 2-for-2 on the night with a quick jump and a speedy sprinter. The B Dash winner took Langford, British Columbia’s Jeff Montgomery along for the ride when both shot past another Canadian, Matt Mansell, on Lap 2 of the fast heat. Meridian racers Johnny Giesler and Mike Murgoitio also would flash by Mansell.
Montgomery and Giesler had a chippy battle for second place behind Veenstra, with the two drivers banging each other on the fifth lap.
Sierra Jackson benefitted from race officials’ ruling in the first of three eight-lap Diamond Cup heat race.
The Middleton, Idaho driver, who won the ASA NSRA series title in 2011 when she also shared the Diamond Cup championship, was put on the front row after Ron Larson of Quesnel, British Columbia, and Salt Lake City, Utah’s Jimmy Waters couldn’t get a clean start on the green flag in two tries.
Jackson took full advantage, sprinting out to a three-second heat race win.
In the second heat race, Meridian’s Bryan Warf picked up the win, but the real excitement was the battle for second place.
Wyatt King, another Meridian driver, slipped past Herriman, Utah’s TJ Thorne in the middle of Turn 3-4 on Lap 2. As he passed on the low side, though, King made contact with Thorne.
Scott Aumen from Duncan, British Columbia would catch Thorne for fourth place on the final lap.
For the second night in a row, Cody Veenstra of Meridian saw a checkered flag in the Western Winged Sprints B Dash.
Veenstra and Ron Larson of Quesnel, British Columbia started the four-lap dash side-by-side, but Larson pushed ahead out of Turn 4 on the first lap.
The lead was short-lived, though, as Veenstra took control with a strong run out of Turn 2 on Lap 2. By the end of that lap, he would be out in front by two seconds.
Mike Murgoitio used the low side of the track to dominate the A Heat despite a pesky run by Roseburg, Ore.’s Matt Hein, who shared the 2011 Diamond Cup championship with Jackson.
Murgoitio eventually won by half a straightaway, even with Hein pitching his car sideways in an attempt to make up ground.

Murgoitio ready to attack big week at home track after NW Speedweek win
MERIDIAN, Idaho — Two Meridian, Idaho residents showed what the Treasure Valley has to offer Monday night in the opener for a new regional Winged Sprintcar series.
Mike Murgoitio, the reigning ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway Mtn. Dew Winged Sprints champion, took advantage of fellow Meridian driver Wyatt King’s bad luck on a restart to take control of the inaugural Canadian-American Western Winged Sprints Series feature at Rocky Mountain Raceways in West Valley City, Utah.
The 50-lap feature attracted 19 sprintcars from Canada, Oregon, Idaho and Utah and served as the first race for the new series after the original opener for the series’ Northwest Asphalt Speedweek was rained out at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls on Saturday night.
Murgoitio led an Idaho sweep of the podium with Meridian’s Johnny Giesler finishing second and Middleton, Idaho racer Sierra Jackson picking up third place. After Victoria, British Columbia’s Matt Mansell spun to trigger one of the race’s two caution flags 23 laps in, Murgoitio shot to the lead on the 3/8th-mile paved oval when King appeared to lose power on the side-by-side restart.
Murgoitio withstood Giesler’s 10-lap challenge, pulling away with five laps remaining. Giesler had prevailed in a duel with Jackson to take off after Murgoitio. There were 19 sprintcars in the field Monday.
Northwest Asphalt Speedweek continues Wednesday night with the 33rd running of the Bob and Tom Naylor Classic. It concludes Friday and Saturday with the BOB FM 96.1 Diamond Cup XXIV. The races at Meridian Speedway also count as part of the Idaho-Utah Challenge for the winged sprints.
Western Winged Sprints series organizer Adam Nelson said that advanced tickets purchased for the Magic Valley Speedway opener will be honored at any of the final three Northwest Asphalt Speedweek shows scheduled in Meridian.
Series officials are working on refund details for fans who purchased admission through third-party ticketing agents and websites. Refund information will be available at www.meridianspeedway.com.
Other standout sprintcar racers expected to invade Meridian this week include Roseburg, Ore.’s Andy Alberding, who set the RMR qualifying record Monday night with a 12.507-second lap at 107.94 mph; and Canadians Ron Larson and Jeff Montgomery. Salt Lake City-area drivers expected include Ryan Burdett, Jimmy Waters and TJ Thorne.
The sprintcar drivers will be gunning for Meridian Speedway’s 10-second bounty, which now sits at $2,500. The first racer to break into a 10-second qualifying lap will walk away with the cash. Alberding holds the Meridian track record with an 11.157-second lap set during Diamond Cup XXII on June 5, 2010.
Other memorial races planned for Wednesday night include the 37th running of the Bill Crow Memorial for the NAPA Late Models, the Sean Miller Memorial for A and B Modifieds and LeeRoy Nelson Memorial for the Pit Stop Drive Thru Mini Stocks.
Wednesday night tickets are $13 for adult admission, $10.50 for military personnel with ID and senior citizens, $9 for children ages 7-11. Children 6 and younger get in free. Fans can get a $3 discount on tickets by using the Easy Tix online option available on www.meridianspeedway.com or www.wingedsprintcars.com.
On Friday and Saturday, the sprintcar drivers will compete for bling in the BOB FM 96.1 Diamond Cup XXIV, which is co-sanctioned by the ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association.
Jackson is the reigning ASA NSRA season champion. She also won last year’s Naylor Classic and shared the Diamond Cup title with Roseburg’s Matt Hein.
Friday’s action is presented by GNO Jewelry and Stinker Stores. Discount ticket vouchers are available at participating Stinker Stores.
Saturday’s racing is presented by GNO Jewelry, and the driver who accumulates the most points over the two-night show will win a diamond ring furnished by GNO Jewelry and AmeriStar.
Friday night tickets cost $15 for adults, $12.50 for seniors/military personnel and $11 for children 7-11. Kids 6 and younger get in free. A $5 discount is available by using the BOB FM promo code when ordering tickets online through the EasyTix option on the speedway’s website or at www.wingedsprintcars.com.
Also racing Friday are Project Filter Pro-4s, Domino’s Pizza Legends and Jr. Stingers.
Admission on Saturday night is $18 for adults, $15.50 for military personnel with ID and senior citizens, and $14 for children ages 7-11. Children 6 and younger get in free. Fans can save $3 off the adult admission price by ordering tickets online at the speedway website or www.wingedsprintcars.com.
Saturday’s support classes include the SPI Super Sixes, Street Stocks and Tates Hornets. The evening will be capped with a bang as the speedway presents its first fireworks show of the year.

NW Asphalt Speedweek opener washed out
by Jon Brown, Twin Falls, Idaho — Inclement weather in Twin Falls, Idaho, forced organizers to cancel Saturday’s scheduled inaugural event of the Canadian-American Western Winged Sprintcar Series.
Instead, Northwest Asphalt Speedweek will begin Monday at Rocky Mountain Raceways in West Valley City, Utah.
Series organizer Adam Nelson said rescheduling the opener for Sunday was discussed, but high winds were forecast for the area around Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls.
Nelson said that advanced tickets purchased for Saturday’s Western Winged Sprints opener will be honored at any of the final three Northwest Asphalt Speedweek shows scheduled for ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Series officials are working on refund details for fans who purchased admission through third-party ticketing agents and websites. Refund information will be available at www.meridianspeedway.com.
The Northwest Asphalt Speedweek for the Western Winged Sprints and Idaho-Utah Challenge shifts to Meridian Speedway beginning with Wednesday’s 33rd annual Bob and Tom Naylor Classic.
On Friday and Saturday, the sprintcar drivers will compete for bling in the BOB FM 96.1 Diamond Cup XXIV presented by GNO Jewelry. Top prize is a diamond ring.
Racing each of the three nights begins at 5 p.m. with qualifying. Heat races start at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets each night are $18 for adults with varying discounts for military personnel with ID, senior citizens,  and children ages 7-11. Children 6 and younger get in free. A family pass good for two adults and up to four children ages 7-11 costs $46. Fans can save $3 off the adult admission price by ordering tickets online at www.wingedsprintcars.com.
Call (208) 888-2813 for more event information. Details of other races in the Western Winged Sprints Series can be found at www.wingedsprintcars.com.
Jackson also won the ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association season championship a year ago. The ASA NSRA will co-sanctioned the Diamond Cup this season.
Other local drivers, such as the Meridian contingent of Mike Murgoitio, Bryan Warf, 2011 ASA NSRA rookie of the year Johnny Giesler and Cody Veenstra, will race this week on their home track. Murgoitio is the reigning Meridian Mtn. Dew Winged Sprints champion and also will be racing against former track champion Chris Ratterree of Nampa, Idaho.
Out-of-towners drivers expected to make the trip include former NSRA champion and current Meridian Speedway record-holder Andy Alberding of Roseburg, Ore., a strong group of Salt Lake City-area drivers, including Ryan Burdett, Jimmy Waters and TJ Thorne. British Columbia hot shoes such as Matt Mansell, Ron Larson, Jeff Montgomery, Darren Yates and Scotty Almond also are expected to make the tow.
