Hometown Hein rolls to Pollard Memorial trophy

By Jon Brown, ROSEBURG, Ore. – The night after his grandfather’s memorial race, Matt Hein dominated to win the Art Pollard/Vern Dykstra Memorial at Douglas County Speedway.

The hometown driver led wire-to-wire in the 50-lap main event co-sanctioned by the Canadian-American Western Winged Sprintcars Series and ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association.

Hein started the night by turning the fastest qualifying lap on the 3/8th-mile oval. The Roseburg, Ore., driver clocked a 12.487-second lap at 108.112 mph. It was Hein’s second pole position of the WWS season. He also ran the fast lap at Stateline Speedway in Post Falls, Idaho, last month.

He finished fourth in the A Trophy Dash, finishing behind Andy Alberding, who lives in nearby Winston, Ore.

Hein and Alberding started the feature side-by-side on the front row. They finished that way 50 laps later, Hein taking the checkered flag and Alberding grabbing second.

Drivers from Oregon claimed three of the top four spots with Rick Brown of Springfield, Ore., taking fourth. Scott Aumen of Duncan, British Columbia finished third one night after setting the WWS track record at Roseburg.

Meridian, Idaho drivers Bryan Warf and Johnny Giesler finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the main event.

Giesler maintained a six-point lead over Warf for the WWS season points lead, but Alberding crept to within 20 points of the lead with his performance.

Hein, meanwhile, moved to No. 8 on the points list, and Brown cracked the top 10.

Warf won the A Dash, and 2012 WWS season champion Sierra Jackson of Middleton, Idaho, was the B Dash winner. She also grabbed a heat race victory, but a mechanical problem knocked her out of the Pollard/Dykstra Memorial after 28 laps.

Greg Middendorf from Snohomish, Wash., was the other driver to capture a checkered flag, winning heat race No. 2.

The Canadian-American Western Winged Sprintcars Series travels to Canada for a pair of 50-lap races during the 53rd annual Daffodil Cup. The ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association co-sanctions the Aug. 16-17 event at Western Speedway in Victoria, British Columbia.
